Interests & Career Goals

My research and clinical interests are in the psychological and behavioral aspects of cancer care. I have a strong interest in working with cancer patients who smoke cigarettes and who have been diagnosed with tobacco-related cancers. While I am particularly interested in tobacco use, my work emphasizes the need for holistic treatment, and I aim to improve cancer treatment outcomes by focusing on a wide variety of health behaviors. Furthermore, I am interested in optimizing health communication for cancer screening, especially among  vulnerable populations and those with limited health literacy. In the future, I aim to establish a research career dedicated to intervention development to improve the health and well-being of cancer patients and to reduce cancer-related health disparities.

Favorite Pastimes

I enjoy distance running, spending quality time with friends, taking my dog for nature walks, and exploring new restaurants and local spots in Durham!

Why I Chose Duke

I chose to complete my graduate training in the Adult Health-Cancer Concentration at Duke University for its world class training in psycho-oncology. The Adult Health-Cancer Concentration exposes me to a diverse range of patient populations and provides comprehensive training in multiple aspects of oncology care. The Cancer Concentration is well aligned with my research interests and career goals and allows me to gain year-long experience working in the Duke Cancer Institute. In addition to working in oncology treatment settings, the Adult Health-Cancer Concentration values breadth and depth of training in health psychology and exposes interns to other aspects of behavioral medicine through year-long elective rotations, such as the Duke Fertility Center and Transplant/Medical Psychology Program.

Research Interests

My research is predominantly focused on the development of novel, theory-based health messages and smoking cessation interventions for cancer patients. I am particularly interested in interventions that target smoking-related stigma, improve health literacy, and reduce defensive responding. Additionally, I am interested in the development of holistic behavioral health interventions that work to target multiple health behaviors that influence cancer survivorship, quality of life, and treatment outcomes.
