The geriatric psychiatry fellowship begins with a lecture series designed to ground trainees in the basics of geriatric care and typical syndromes. These multidisciplinary lectures are held once a week for the first quarter of the year. Also available are various seminar series focused on long-term care, research methods and ideas, journal clubs and geriatric-specific quality improvement. Psychiatry-specific talks are arranged for the later quarters of the year. Clinical site-specific didactic education occurs on each rotation, including an established electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) lecture series.
Fellows are also encouraged to work with medical students, residents and other medical professionals and are supported in these collaborations.

“I decided to pursue fellowship training at Duke for the in-depth exposure to the many facets of geriatric psychiatry. From my experience as a psychiatry resident at Duke, I know the excellent mentorship and academic environment will allow me to gain meaningful skills and knowledge that will profoundly impact my patient care. Additionally, the supportive culture and flexibility to pursue my specific interests is instrumental not only for my professional aspirations but also in my personal development.”
