Interests & Career Goals

My scholarly work has led me on a path toward becoming a socially responsive health psychologist, engaged in leadership and scholarly roles centered on justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion. My background reflects a strong commitment to multiculturalism, social justice, and cultural humility – values that I consistently infuse in my clinical and research efforts. I continue to seek opportunities to expand my abilities to embody these values, striving to be a stronger advocate and standing in solidarity with the communities I serve and belong to. These values are at the heart of my work and serve as a compass for my career.

Favorite Pastimes

I am a person who loves to eat adventurously, sing her heart out at karaoke, walk the city, and cook delicious food. I love trying on new experiences that push me out of my comfort zone – meeting new people, seeing new places, and creating new moments that make life vibrant.

Why I Chose Duke

I chose Duke because I saw the potential to foster genuine, nourishing community both within and outside of Duke’s walls. Duke, of course, offered excellent training opportunities that I believed would build my clinical and professional skills, and, just as meaningful to me was how the program demonstrated a culture of warmth, support, and genuine care for trainees’ well-being. Internship year, as many know, can be a difficult period of transition and change, so it was important for me to choose a placement where I could truly picture myself being supported to thrive.

Research Interests

My research interests have historically focused on racism, racial discrimination, and trauma as experienced by Black/African Americans. More recently, I have concentrated more specifically on mental health disparities, particularly the barriers to accessing and utilizing mental health services shaped by systemic oppression. I am also beginning to explore strengths-based approaches to healing in greater depth, emphasizing the role of cultural assets in recovery from traumatic injury and in mental health care for African American communities. I remain committed to scholarship that resists deficit-based narratives and elevates community voice, especially in support of the healing and thriving of African American communities whose labor, culture, and resources have been historically over-extracted. Through my work, I aim to advance equity within mental health systems and contribute to collective healing that centers psychological strength and community-defined wellness.
