Harold Kudler Wins ISTSS Outstanding Service Award

Harold Kudler, MD, a medical associate professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, received the Outstanding Service Award from the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies.

Presented at the ISTSS annual meeting on September 17-20, the award honors a member of ISTSS who has made a significant and sustained contribution to the Society—enhancing its mission, advancing its goals, and strengthening its impact over time.

Kudler served as chief consultant for mental health services at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and held numerous national leadership roles, including co-chair of the VA Special Committee on PTSD and co-lead of the VA/DoD PTSD treatment guidelines.

He has been deeply engaged with ISTSS since 1987—serving on the Board of Directors, founding the practice guidelines committee, co-editing StressPoints’ longest-running column, and organizing landmark programs. He chaired the membership committee, multiple special interest groups, and the history task force, producing interviews and videos that formed the basis for ISTSS’ 40th anniversary retrospectives and a forthcoming documentary. He is also active with the International Center for Multigenerational Legacies of Trauma.

Kudler served on the Duke faculty from 1984 to 2014 and has held adjunct and consulting appointments with the department since 2014.
