Interests & Career Goals

As a retired Olympic figure skater and now a clinical psychology doctoral candidate, my goal is to ensure that athletes at all levels have equitable access to evidence-based mental healthcare integrated into their training and competitive pipelines. My experiences as an athlete, coach, and in various leadership roles have underscored the importance of prioritizing athlete mental well-being in tandem with performance psychology. To help address some of the top concerns in athletes, I’ve pursued specialized training in treating eating disorders, anxiety disorders, and relationship distress. Once I complete my training, I hope to continue bridging the research-practice gap, treat athletes with various mental health concerns with a specialty in treating eating disorders, and advocate for cultural change around mental health in sport.

Favorite Pastimes

Although I didn’t love the great outdoors as a kid, I completely fell in love with camping and overlanding over the last several years, especially now that my husband guides with Mountain State Overland. One of my favorite things to do is cook, and we love cooking epic meals over a fire for our camping friends and on MSO trips. I also spend a lot of time getting outside with our goofy and sassy huskies, Jax and Ruthie.

Why I Chose Duke

Even though it was a tough decision to trade in my Carolina blue, I knew Duke was the perfect fit for my internship training goals! One of the aspects that drew me most to Duke is the opportunity to finish out my eating disorder training with Drs. Nancy Zucker and Chantal Gil, with emphases on working with individuals with ARFID and delivering family-based treatment to adolescents and their families. I fell in love with couples-based work over the last year of my training at UNC, and I am eager to continue that work at the Duke Family Studies Clinic. I am also particularly excited to expand my breadth of knowledge on delivering short-term and high-impact treatments, especially for folks (like myself!) who experience chronic pain.

Research Interests

My program of eating disorder research unites my enthusiasm for increasing access to evidence-based care and my experience as an athlete. To address barriers to treatment and improve treatment experiences, I’ve focused on leveraging digital mental health tools to transform how we deliver real-time treatment to those who need it. My dissertation used passively collected physiological and actigraphy data from wearables to predict when folks are at high risk of engaging in disordered eating behaviors, and we hope to extend this work by providing just-in-time adaptive interventions in the future.

The other arm of my research focuses on eating disorders, disordered eating, and poor body image since they continue to be a significant problem in athletes. I’m particularly interested in how we can adapt treatments for athletes given that there are numerous sport-related risk and maintenance factors for eating disorders, and how we can influence sport culture to facilitate meaningful change around mental health. I’m excited to continue merging these two areas of research while on internship at Duke this year!
