Dr. John Mitchell is a licensed clinical psychologist who specializes in programs of research that include ADHD, as well as substance use and HIV prevention.

As a faculty member in the Duke ADHD Program, Dr. Mitchell conducts research, provides clinical services primarily to adults with ADHD, and supervises trainees. Dr. Mitchell’s research focuses on various aspects of ADHD, including developmental outcomes, assessment and treatment, and co-occurring substance use. He conducted the first controlled study of a mindfulness-based treatment program for adults with ADHD—the MAPs for ADHD Program—and in 2021 co-authored a treatment manual on this intervention. He has published over 70 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters.

Clinically, Dr. Mitchell specializes in empirically supported assessment and treatment of psychiatric disorders primarily in adulthood with a focus on ADHD in adulthood. He regularly provides training to clinicians on the assessment and treatment of ADHD in adulthood.

Dr. Mitchell completed his master’s and doctorate in clinical psychology at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, his pre-doctoral clinical internship at Duke University Medical Center, and his post-doctoral fellowship at the Duke ADHD Program.
