Interests and Career Goals

I am training to be a physician-scientist in mental health and data science. My clinical interests are broad-ranging. My current academic focus in using large-scale social media data as a data source for understanding mental health.

Favorite Pastimes

Board games, running, exploring nature, and following thinkers on Twitter.

Strengths of the program

The program leadership and teaching attendings value and understand residents which makes for a supportive and enriching training culture. We receive excellent training in the art and science of psychiatry across a broad range of conditions and patients. The residents like and support each other. In addition, as a Physician-Scientist track member, I enjoy generous protected time each year, complete academic freedom to work with Duke's outstanding faculty across departments, and professional development and community from track leadership and members. I have the support I need to grow as a physician-scientist and achieve my goals.

Research Interests

I study human behavior at scale in the free-living environment of social media and work with PI Rick Hoyle. I got my start in social media mental health research by analyzing the sleep patterns of social media users because the timestamps of their posts are objective, machine-readable data and am now branching out to studying other aspects of mental health on social media such as substance use. In the coming years, one direction that matters to me would be translating my scholarly work into innovations that help people to make healthier and kinder decisions online.
