Inpatient Care

Inpatient Care

Patients suffering from mental illness or who are in mental or emotional crisis are sometimes best cared for in an inpatient setting. Duke clinicians provide experienced and compassionate mental health care to adults 18 and older in two inpatient facilities: Duke University Hospital Williams Inpatient Psychiatric Unit and Durham Regional Hospital.

Williams Ward

Williams Ward is an 18 bed inpatient adult general psychiatric ward. The ward serves to provide acute stabilization of patients in crisis. We do not treat primary substance related disorders or inpatient detoxification.

The treatment team is composed of a psychiatrist, psychologists, nurses, clinical social workers, recreational therapist, psychiatric residents, medical and nursing students and other ancillary staff as needed. Physician assessments are done daily. Regular group therapies are provided. Consultations are available, as clinically indicated, by other medical and surgical disciplines.

Referrals for inpatient hospitalization can be made by calling 919-206-9795.

Emergency Psychiatry

The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Services provides consultative services to the Emergency Department on a 365/24/7 basis. Consultations are completed by Advanced Practice Providers, Psychiatric Residents, and Licensed Clinical Social Workers. Both adults and children are seen.

Consult-Liaison Psychiatry (Psychosomatic Psychiatry)

Psychiatric consultations are available to both the adult and pediatric hospital. Consultations are arranged by the primary service/team of the patients. Consultations are available 365/24/7.
