The focus of our research is on the diagnosis and treatment of ADHD. We are pursuing this interest in several related projects. In the NIMH National MTA Study, a cooperative agreement between NIMH and 6 university sites we are beginning the first year of data collection. This study involves 96 7 to 9 year old children who will be randomly assigned to 4 treatment groups (psychosocial, medication, combined treatment, and community control) and treated over a 2 year period. The intensive psychosocial treatment consists of parent training, paraprofessional classroom aides who deliver a behavioral program in the classroom, and a summer treatment program. We are also investigating new pharmacologic treatments including transdermal delivery of buspirone, nicotine agonists, and MAO-B inhibitors. In other clinical studies we are evaluating central mechanisms of attention with new neurocognitive tests.
