Clinical Interests:
Evaluation and treatment of mental health problems in combat veterans; posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), traumatic brain injury (TBI), other disorders of mood, anxiety, or cognition; co-morbid substance use disorders
Research Interests:
My research focuses on the clinical problems seen in military veterans. These interests include Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), traumatic brain injury (TBI), and the co-occurence of these two conditions. Several projects involve blast injury and how blast can affect normal physiology in both the body and brain. With my Duke colleagues at the engineering school's Injury Biomechanics Laboratory, and our collaborators at the University of Pennsylvania and Columbia University, we are investigating the thresholds at which blast exposure leads to clinically significant changes. Specific topics of interest are blast injury as a cause for neurophysiologic changes, behavioral changes, injury risk modeling, and immune system response to injury.
