Personal activities

I facilitate access to major programs in the Center for the Study of Aging and Human Development that have relevance for the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, including OARS, CERAD, and Duke EPESE.

In each case, I also work with data from these programs. Current work with OARS includes assessing the reliability of the comorbidity scale included in this measure, and also a comorbidity subscale, extensively used in cancer research. Regarding CERAD, I have recently developed norms for one measure for which norms were not previously available.

Duke EPESE data have most recently been used to identify 10-year latent class trajectories of depression (with Dr. M. Kuchibhatla). We identified four latent classes. Two were fairly conventional (consistent low and consistent high depressive symptomatology), but in one class where cognitive status was low, initially low depressive symptomatology increased (possibly a precursor of a dementing disorder), and in another class high depressive symptomatology improved. Duke EPESE data are also being used to examine trajectories of obesity in the elderly, and the concomitants of those trajectories, as well as examining conjoint trajectories of depression, activities of daily living, cognition and self-rated health (with Dr. K. Hayden and Dr. M. Kuchibhatla).
